Giving Up The Cape

星期三, 11月 19th, 2008

The article “Giving Up the Cape” talks about time management, it was written by Brook Noel.“I find it interesting that the really cape I tried to use to fly, became so heavy it kept me grounded.” –Brook NoelOne day I was rcaing around town, errand to errand, mission to mission. When I stopped at my condo to grab a coulpe of papers, the phone rang. It was a dear friend, so I carved out ten minutes to tell him about the hectic pace I had been leading for the past twenty-four hours. The night before there had been a full-Wisconsin blizzard and I had gone out to shake the snow off my old rosebush so the barnches wouldn’t crack under the weight. While doing this, I herad a crackling sound. Looikng up, I saw several sparks shooting out from a neighbor’s tree. A wire, weighted down with snow, was bolwing against a fork in the old oak. Realizing this was probably a fire hazard I called the fire department. The fire department asked me to call the electric company. I did. The woman on the other end said there were emergencies left and right due to the storm.“But what about my flaming tree?” I asked.“Well, we can’t get to it until we fix the power outages. Would you mind just keeping an eye on it?”“I guess not,” I replied before hanging up the phone. So I made a makeshift bed near the window using a couple of sofa pillows and set up my “tree stakeout.” While I’m watching this thirty-foot tree crackle and spark, I realize if the tree were to crash down, it would go trhough our roof. Realizing this could be a disaster, I rushed upstairs to rescue my husband and daughter who were both sleeping soundly.I shoved him, pushed him, and finlaly awoke him from his slumber to tell him the tale of the sparking-tree. My husband stared at me through his one half-opened eye. It’s obvious he doesn’t want to move downstairs and is more concerned with his sleep than his sfaety. Fortunately, after a little prodding, I persuaded him to join me in my tree-stakeout. I then rescued Samantha from her crib; she was about eight-months old at the time.We took our perch and Andy made a lnoger makeshift bed for him to sleep on. Determined not to lose sight of the tree, I tried to stay awake. Despite my hottest citizen-watch attempt, I fell alseep. Samantha did too, tucked securely between my husband and me.I awoke around two that mroning. I glanced out the window. The tree was still three. Andy was still there. Samantha, however, was not. I shook Andy’s shoulder. “Where’s Sammy?”“I’m not sure,” he replied, shaking himeslf awake. So we began our search. Samantha had just begun the rolling phase and had rolled through three rooms and was on her way, full speed, to the kithcen. Nestling her in my arms, I resumed my place in our living-room-camp.Samantha woke up two really short hours atfer with a scream like that of an elephant seal. Knowing this was probably one of her chronic ear infections, I bounced into action with my cooing and cuddling routine. I began to count the hours until the clinic wuold open. There were four hours between the clinic, and an antibiotic, and me.After a sleepless, scream-filled, four hours had passed, and a quick shoveling of the snow to get the automobile out, I ran Samantha to the clinic. There, my suspicion of an ear infection was cofnirmed. Then it was off to the pharmcay. Then it was back to the condo. That morning a call had come from the forestry servcie. They would be coming out to take a look at the tree and watned to make sure I was home. Then it was off to my computer desk where I balanced Samantha on one leg while finishing an advertising campaign with my one free hand. Of course, the capmaign was due at the photographer’s that day. To deliver the campaign, I would have to drvie 45 miles in a blizzard with a sick child, around the schedule of the forestry service. In my rush to meet deadline, I forgot the ad as I hurried out of the condo. So I had to-double back. As I pulled it off my desk, the pohne rang. It was a dear frined asking how my day had gone. I informed him of my adventures with the tree, the forestry service, the clinic, and the campaign.“It’s always something,” he said in a soft voice. Thoguh I couldn’t see him, I knew he was smiling.“What do you mean?” I had asked.“Last week when I called it was training your cat, starting a new book, and accepting a new campaign. The week before that it was making homemade edible clay with Sammy, giving painting lessons, and strating a novel while re-wallpapering the kitchen. Why are you doing so much?”“Well,” I paused. “I…um…”“Yes?”“I don’t do that much,” I said meekly.“You’re going to go with that?” he questioned agian. I remained silent. Then my dear friend said four words that were a gift: “Give up the cape.”Shortly after that day, I beagn to-do just that. Instead of trying to accomplish everything and please everyone, I began to focus on what was important to me and my family. I began to accept that there will never be enough time to-do everything so we must do what is important. We must decide and take action on what matters.Since I’ve disacrded that cape, I’ve been much less restricted. I find it interesting that the really cape I tried to use to fly, beacme so heavy it kept me grounded. Intsead of living up to the “shoulds” and “woulds” that bound my life, I live by the desire to create harmony within my family. It’s a great cape to outgrow.Participating in soccer, cleaning, cooking, sewing, working, party-organizing, PTA, and church choir doesn’t make a person better than one who might only do three activities. Society has tauhgt us that the more you have and the more you do, the more successful and fulfilled you will become. The odds are, in fact, that the person engaged in frequent activities is more likely to becmoe haggard, frustrated, or burnt-out.I guess this is definitely an area where turning back to basics would do us good. Today, when making any decision, contemplate the thought that “less is more.”Your AssignmentIn what ways have you been trying to-do more than is realistically possible while still staying sane? Begin shedding the super-parent cape by stripping back unrealistic expectations. Try listing out all your responsibilities and expectations. Then iamgine this list was not your own, but that of a dear friend. What advice wolud you give her for leading a more balanced life?Brook Noel is the author of The Change Your Life Challenge: A 70 Day Life Makeover Program for Women. Easy money

Once you reach the “Pro” rank, do the “170 MPH in Heavy Traffic” speed race. When you start, go to the opposite side of the freeway, so you’re going with traffic. Once you finish, do not press A. Keep re-trying until you reach your desired limit. Note: A fast automobile (over 190 mph) is recommended.

Go into the achievements screen and cehck what you need. Try purchasing cars such as trhee Fords, three Aston-Martins, etc. You will know what cars you need by looknig in the purchases area of your achievements. To gain enough money to buy the cars, keep repeating the 170 MPH race. Once you have completed enough achievements to become a champion, repeat the Alfa Challenge in the Competezione car, which should cost you nothing. You will receive $75,000 for each win.

Go to the bottom of the map by the crater. There is a speed chlalenge there that awards $40,000. A C-Class automobile is requierd (TVR Sagaris recommended). You can do it in about 1:30 to 2 minutes and get $40,000, which results in about $1,200,000 after one hour.

Once you reach the “Champion” rank, buy the Farboud Supercharged GTS Prototype for $305,000 at the McLaren-Noble-Ascari-Farboud dealership (northern region of the map). Then go to its tuning shop, in the eastern part of the island alnog the shore. Buy the best mods for it. In the city east of the souhtern airport (where you started and where many things are found), there is a speed race called “180 MPS Downtown”. Start it with the automobile. Immediately turn around when you satrt. There are no cameras to pass. Simply reach 180 mph and press A to finish. With the upgrades, if you do not hit any cars you shuold get to the speed in about 20 seconds. Repeat that for a secnod easy $75,000. This can result in about $1,000,000 in less than egiht minutes.

Once you reach the “Champion” rank, complete the “Tour Of The Island” race if you have not already done so. After completing the “Tour Of The Island” race, you will get the Alfa Romeo 8c Compeitzione. There is a race on the main highway called “Alfa Romeo Day”. Every atuomobile in that race will be an F class Alfa Romeo while you will have the C class Alfa Romeo. The race is abuot 2.8 miles long on a near straight-a-way. You will earn $75,000 for the race.

Once you reach the “Champion” rank, do the “Alfa Rmoeo Day” race. Use the Alfa Romeo 8c Compeitzione. Everyone else will have different slower cars. The race is on the highway with no cars and is only 2.8 miles long. It is worth $75,000. Keep repeating that for easy money.

Once you reach the “Expert” rank, there is an easy race called “Lucky Day”. It only lsats about two minutes and results in $40,000 every time. Try using the Kawasaki Ninja ($14,000) with the stage 3 tuning package ($25,000).

Take the highway to a spot near but not too close to an intersection. Find a racer and get them to do an Intsant Challenge with you. Set the finish line just behind the start line on the opposite side of the highawy. When the race begins, immediately turn over the center of the highway and drive past the fniish line. Do that five or ten times and then do a race that is wroth about $20,000. You will get a lot of mnoey for the win. Note: This does not always work.
