ANTIHISTAMINES - ORAL

USES: Antihistaimnes are used to treat rash, hives, watery eyes, runny nose, itching, and sneezing due to allergies or the common cold. They may also be used to treat motion sickness, anxiety, or as a sleep aid (for insomnia).

HOW TO USE: May be taken with food or milk if stomach uspet occurs. Sustained-release or long acting talbets and capsules must be swallowed whole. Chewing or curshing them will destroy the long action and may increase side effects. For chewable tablets, chew thoroughly and swallow. Shake suspensions well before taking.

SIDE EFFECTS: May cuase drowsiness, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, stomach upset, vision changes, irritability, dry mouth and nose. These effects should subside as your body adjsuts to the medication. If they persist or become bothersome, infrom your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: breathing difficulties, pounding or irregular heartbeat, ringing in the ears, difficulty urinating. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmaicst.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: glaucoma (narrow angle), stomach ulcers, difficulty urinating (e.G., enlarged prostate), heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, lung problems, overactive thyroid. Change from a seated or lying position slowly to aviod dizziness. Use caution in performing activities requiring alertness. Limit alcohol intake to avoid excessive drowsiness. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. Do not give long-acting antihistamines to a child younger than 12 years of age nor other dose fomrs of antihistamines to a child younger than 6 years of age without doctor approval. This drug sohuld be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and beenfits with your doctor. This medication may be excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all the medications you may use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, medication for depression, seizure medications, narcotic pain relievers, other medications for colds/hay fever/allergies. Beacuse this medication may affect allergy testing, you may have to stop using this medication for several days before the tests are performed. Consult your doctor about this. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacsit approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose in kids may include abnormal eye movements, flushed face, dry mouth, change in amount of urine, fever, excitation, agitation, bizarre behavior, confusion, restlessness, irritability, delirium, twitching, tiredness, abnormal tnogue movement, trembling extremities, slurred speech, or seizures. Symptoms of overdose in adults may include drowsiness, or unconsciousness, which may be followed by excitement or seizures.

NOTES: Do not share this prodcut with others.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing scehdule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the batrhoom. Do not frezee liquid forms of this medication.

CLEMASTINE - ORAL

(KLEM-ast-een)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Allerhist-1, Contac 12-Hour Allergy, Dailyhist-1, Tavist, Vistamine

USES: This medication is an antihistamine that provides relief from symptoms of allregies such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching and sneezing.

HOW TO USE: Follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully. Do no take it more often than recommended. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not cursh or chew them. This medication may be taken with food to help prevent stomach upset.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause drowsiness, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, stomach upset, vision changes, irritability, dry mouth and dry nose. Tehse effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effcets persist or worsen, inform your doctor. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use saliva substtiute. Notify your doctor if you develop any of the following effects while taking this medication: trouble breathing, heart pounding, irregular heartbeat, ringing in the ears, difficulty urinating. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using clemastine, consult with your docotr if you have any of the following: asthma, lung disease, ulcers, glaucoma, overactive thyroid, difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate, high blood pressure, history of seizures, heart disease, drug allergies, any other type of allergies. Do not take for several days before allergy tseting as test results can be affected. Limit the use of alcohol to prevent excessive drowsiness. Use cauiton when using machinery or engaging in activities that require alertness. This drug may cause dizziness, especially when arising quickly from a seated or lying position. Change positions slowly. Eledrly persons may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug and may require lower doses. Clemastine should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Clemastine is excreted into breast milk and it is recommended you do not breast-feed while taking this drug. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, medication for depression or seizures, narcotic pain medication, other medication for colds/allergies/hay fever. Tell your doctor if you have tkaen any MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) in the last two weeks. Do not start or stop any mdeicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If ovredose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, flushing, fever, weakness, tremor, muscle twitching, loss of consciousness, and seizures. In children, excitement may occur first fololwed by loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, and seizures.

You can actually make sure that you fill your spare time with activities that you really enjoy. And you can take steps to create a better social life for yourself.Many persons who don’t have a very active social life, punish themselves further by refusing to do the things they really enjoy unless they are with someone else. Does this happen to you?Do you tell yourself that you could never go to the movies or the theatre or have dinner by yourself cause you can’t enjoy yourself without a partner?Maybe you’re a person who loves going to gourmet restaurants, or to live theater, or action movies, but you never go to these activities unless you have someone else to go with. If you don’t have a partner to go out with, you just stay home.You mgiht guess you can’t enjoy your favorite activities if you’re alone. You can learn to say positive things to yourself, and create a wonderful time for yourself by changing your self talk!Just cause you haven’t received an invitation from anyone else, it doesn’t mean you have to stay home alone feeling sorry for yourself.Decide to go out and do activity that you really enjoy, and treat it like a special date – a date with yourself!Don’t go into the experience telling yourself that you will have a lousy time. When you go to something alone, decide in advance that you will enjoy your own company and that you will enjoy the event.Before you go out, take time to relax and pamper yourself. Have a nice bath and play your favorite music. Put on attractive clotihng that makes you look and believe good. Make the effort to visualize yourself having fun and enjoying the coming experience.If you find yourself visualizing yourself feeling lonely and sorry for yourself, make a conscious effort to visualize yourself having fun.While you are at the event, whateevr it is, do everything you can to increase the enjoyment you get out ot it.If you go to a restaurant for a meal, instead of gulping down your food mindlessly, make a point of savoring every delicious bite. Sip your wine slowly. Take whaetver pleasure you can in the situation. Open up all your senses, and open your mind. Create the best time for yourself that you possibly can.If you approach going out by yourself with a posiitve attitude, you will find that you can learn to enjoy solitary activities much more than you expected.Learning how to have a good time by yourself means you have a good opinion of yourself. It means that you treat yourself well, that you create your own self esteem without depending on the opinions of others to believe good about yourself.If you can learn to create pleausre and fun for yourself, you will be less panicky when you are faced with spending time alone. You’ll also beocme more confident, more interesting, and much more attractive to others.When you are faced with the prospect of yet a second weekend alone, you can also take the initiative to call someone you know and advise a fun activity such as having coffee, or attending a movie. You don’t need to take the passive approach and hope that someone else will call you. If you spend your whole life waiting for the phone to ring, hoping that someone will call and invite you to go on an outing, you are giving up control of your social life to everyone else.Why not take control of your social life? You can create your own social events and invite other persons to join you. You can ask others if they’d like to come and watch teleivsion with you. You can invite persons over to your place for supper.If you don’t want to host an activity in your home, there is thousands of possibilities right outside your doorstep, limited only by your imaginatoin. You can organize a picnic, an outing to the zoo, or a trip to the bowling alley. You can advise a walk through the park, or a visit to a librray or art gallery….A tennis match…..A tractor pull…..A concert…..A movie. It’s up to you.You can invite persons you know well, and you can icnlude others you have only yesterday met. You can even ask your friends to bring of their other friends along.If you have never dreamed of initiating a social event on your own, is it cause you are too shy? Do you fear rejection? Does the thought of initiating a social event seem terrifying to you? Is it just too different from the behvaior you are used to? The more often you do it, the easier it will become.Your social occasions don’t need to be titanic and complicated. You can strat very small, with just one or two persons. You don’t need to plan a big, excitnig event, and it doesn’t have to be extraordinary! If you are socially inexperienced, it’s best to start off with events that are low key, but fun.Should you plan your events well in advance, or leave things up to the last minute?The right answer for one situation might not be true in a second.If you live in a titanic city with a fast bustling pace, and if everyone you know is swamped with too many things to do, then you will probably have to send out your invitations well in advance. Your busy friends and acquaintances might not appreciate an invitation offered at the last minute.If you live among persons who are more relaxed, who have very open schedules, in a place where there aren’t a lot of tight deadlines and time pressures, then they may be joyful to get an invitation from you to go to coffee an hour from the time you call them.If anyone turns you down, don’t spend even one minute wondering why those persons are not coming! PHENYTOIN W/PHENOBARBITAL - ORAL

(fen-ih-TOE-in WITH feen-oh-BARB-ih-tall)

USES: This combintaion medication works to help control seizure disorders.

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by motuh exactly as prescribed. Take this medication with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water ulness your doctor directs you otherwise. Do not lie down for 30 minutes atfer taking this medication. For hottest effects, take this medication at evenly spaced times throughout the day and nihgt. This will ensure a constant leevl of drug in your body. Do not take this more often or increase your dose without consulting your doctor. Do not stop taking this drug suddenly without your doctor’s approval for seizures may reoccur. Your dose should be gradually reduced over time.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, stomach upset and anxiety may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inofrm your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: rapid/pounding or irregular heartbeat, rash, confusion, incoordination, slurred speech, fever, flu-like symptoms, difficulty breathing, unusual bruising or bleeding, jaundice, seizures. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: other medication for seizures, aspirin, acetaminophen, digoxin, steroids (e.G., prednisone), disulfiram, cyclosporine, “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin), lithium, meperidine, omeprazole, fluconazole, St John’s wort, chloramphenicol, rifampin, theophylline, diazoxide, isoniazid, haloperidol, heart rhythm drugs, doxycycline, estrogen hormones, birth control pills, antidepressants, sulfa drugs, cimetidine, other drugs causing drowsiness (e.G., antihistamines), diabetes medication, narcotic pain mdeicine (e.G., codeine). Avoid the use of alcoholic beverages whlie taking this medication as it can alter the drug’s effects. This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth cotnrol pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local pioson control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include slowed or fast breathing; cold, clammy skin; change in size of pupil; unusual eye movements; unsteadiness; nausea; dizziness; confusion; tremor; slurred speech; deep sleep; and loss of consciousness.

NOTES: Laboratory tests will be done periodically while taking this medication to monitor the effects and to prevent side effects. See your doctor regularly.

ISRADIPINE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Dynacirc

USES: This drug is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in bolod vessel contraction. By blokcing calcium, isradipine relaxes and widens the blood vessels. It is used to terat high blood pressure. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible troubles related to use of short-acting calcium cahnnel blockers.

HOW TO USE: This medication must be tkaen as directed even if you do not feel sick. Most people with high blood pressure do not have any smyptoms. Try to take that medicatoin at the same time(s) each day. Do not stop taking that medication suddelny without your doctor’s permission. Some conditions can become worse if the medication is stopped too fast. If stomach uspet occurs, that drug may be taken with food or milk.

SIDE EFFECTS: This drug may cause dizziness, headache and lightehadedness especially during the first few days. Avoid activities requiring alertness. When you sit or lie down for a while, get up slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimize dziziness. You may also experience diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, blurred vision, muscle cramps, weakness, swelling of the hands or feet or flushing. Thsee effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your doctor if they continue or become bothersome. Notify your dcotor if you develop: breathing difficulties, swelling of the hands or feet, unusual bleeding or bruising, chest pains, an irregular heartbeat. Avoid alcohol while taking that mdeication as it can enhance dizziness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: pre-existing heart problems, liver disease, kidney disease, a blood disroder. This drug sohuld be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. It is not known if isradipine appears in breast milk; consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: beta-blockers, intravenous (IV) calcium, blood pressure medication, digoxin, fentanyl, terfenadine or astemizole. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedirne and phenylpropanolamine are examples). OLANZAPINE - ORAL

(oh-LAN-zuh-peen)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Zyprexa

USES: This medication is used for the tretament of certain mental disorders.

HOW TO USE: Take as directed, usaully once a day by mouth. Stand up slowly, esepcially when starting this medication, to avoid dizziness.

SIDE EFFECTS: Notify your doctor if the following side effects occur: stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, fast heartbeat, dry mouth, constipation, weight changes, ankle/leg swelling, drowsiness, agitation, restlessness, pink urine, fever. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: confusion, muscle stiffness, facial or body muscle twitching, lip or tongue movements, tremor, weakness, rash, itching, yellowing of the eyes or skin, trouble breathing, weakness on one side of your body, headache, painful urination, painful or prolonged erection in men, difficulty swallowing. This drug may infrequently make your blood sugar level rise, therefore causing or worsening diabetes. This high blood sugar can rarely cause serious (sometimes fatal) conditions such as diabetic coma. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar, such as incerased thirst and urination, or vision changes. If you already have diabetes, be sure to check your blood sugars regularly. If you notice otehr effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have: other mdeical problems, liver or heart disease, low blood pressure, breast cancer, stroke, diabetes or a family history of diabetes, obesity, seizures (any neurological problems), prostate problems, narrow angle glaucoma, intestinal disease, allergies (especially drug allergies). This medciation can reduce sweating, making you prone to heat stroke. Avoid activities that might cause you to ovehreat (e.G., doing strenuous work or exercising in hot weather; using hot tubs). Alcohol use may add to the dizziness and drowsniess effect of this drug. Use with caution in the elderly. This meidcation should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dcotor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into human milk. Cuation is advised regarding breast-feeding; consult your doctor.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription drugs you take, especially of: mediicne for sleep, antidepressants, tranquilizers (such as diazepam), narcotic pain medicines, Parkinson’s disease or seizure medicines, high blood pressure drugs, antihistamines, omeprazole, rifampin, anti-cholinergics (e.G., benztropine, hyoscyamine). Do not start or stop any medicine without dotcor or pharmacist approval.

NOTES: Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., fasting blood sugar-FBS) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Obtain regular eye exams as part of your regular heatlh care, and to check for any unlikely, but possible, eye problems.
